SYCAMORE

Though less well known than the common fig tree Ficus carica , whose fruit is renowned worldwide, sycamore was a sacred tree in ancient Egypt. F. sycomorus has a stately shape. Its leaves are smaller than those of F. carica, and resemble the leaves of the mulberry tree. The ripening of the fruit is hastened by manually incising the fruit a few days before harvesting. The white juice from the fruit and leaves is called the milk of the sycamore.

Sycamore remains date back to the third millennium BC in ancient Egypt. They are still found in the Egyptian delta region, and around oases. This long-lived tree can survive extended exposure to sun and drought, and was often planted alongside roads. The oldest sycamore tree in Egypt is in Matarria, a suburb of Cairo. The species also grows throughout Africa (south of the Sahara Desert), Southern Arabia, Lebanon, and neighbouring regions.
